In preparation for the upcoming construction on the MacLeod building, the EECE01 network needs to be reconfigured. The UBC IT Connectivity Infrastructure team will be replacing the backbone connection and network distribution switch, currently in the MacLeod building, with links and switches in ICICS and Kaiser.

There will be up to an hour and a half outage on the EECE01 network, which spans the Kaiser, MacLeod, and ICICS buildings, to disconnect MacLeod from the EECE01 network. '''During this service window on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, 06:00-07:30 PDT, all wired and wireless network services in the affected buildings will be unavailable.'''

How To Use VPN

Access to ECE resources such as workstations, printers, and network shares is limited to ECE subnets, the ECE VPN, and the "ubcprivate" wifi network. All other access is blocked by the ECE firewall.

For access to the ECE VPN and ubcprivate, contact it@ece.ubc.ca. In your request, please specify your CWL username and your affiliation with ECE.

==Connecting to the UBC VPN==
A Cisco AnyConnect VPN client can be downloaded from https://myvpn.ubc.ca.

The client should connect to the server <code>myvpn.ubc.ca</code>. Log onto the VPN using your CWL credentials.

If you have been granted access to the ECE VPN, append <code>.ece</code> to your CWL login. For example, if your CWL login is <code>''spock''</code>, log on as <code>''spock''.ece</code>. (Without the <code>.ece</code> suffix, you would be placed on the UBC network, but outside the ECE firewall.)

ECE is the target of an ongoing Denial of Service attack. ECE IT staff are working with UBC Network admins to restore normal service levels as soon as possible.

For some applications, connecting to the ubcsecure wireless network (rather than wired Ethernet or ubcprivate wireless) may be a suitable workaround.

Lost outbound messages from webmail (May 15-16, 2019)

On May 15 at 11 am, a new ECE webmail server was put into service. Unfortunately, a network misconfiguration caused the server to appear to reside outside the ECE network. Spam-mitigation rules then dropped and discarded all messages sent from webmail, since they claimed to be coming from an ECE server outside the ECE network.

While the network misconfiguration is being investigated, we have temporary suppressed the spam-mitigation rule that is dropping those messages. That change was implemented May 16 at 4 pm.

The 55 users who sent messages using webmail during the period from May 15 11am to May 16 4pm are being notified individually.

We are also aware that ECE webmail has some quirks in its display, and will be addressing them shortly.
