<dd>As part of its Change Management plan, UBC IT has scheduled some upgrades for Victoria Day weekend that will likely result in interruptions to network connectivity. On Saturday morning, ECE expects temporary loss of network connectivity, with consequences for services that rely on our NetApp filer, including home directories, e-mail, websites, and the Request Tracker ticket system.

One ECE user's account was compromised after divulging his/her password in a phishing attack. The compromised account was used to send spam through the ECE mail server for several hours on the morning of April 15, until we disabled the account.

As a result of this incident, mail from ECE is currently being rejected by some e-mail providers, including GMail, Hotmail, and Comcast. Until the ECE mail server is removed from these blacklists, you may need to find alternate ways of corresponding with users on those mail systems.

== Anti-Phishing Advice ==

Please do your part to keep your password safe, as a security breach can impact all users in the department. In particular,

* Any e-mail announcement regarding your ECE account should cross-reference a website with *.ece.ubc.ca in the URL. You should be suspicious of any message that does not.
* Any notice regarding your account will be signed by a named member of ECE IT Services staff, ''never'' from a generic entity such as "Your ece.ubc.ca webmail team".
* Never reveal your password to any person. ECE IT Services staff will never ask you for your password.
* All legitimate ECE services will use encrypted connections for logging in. (HTTPS, SSH, and IMAPS are examples of secure protocols.) Any service that asks you to enter your ECE password over an unencrypted HTTP connection or to send your password by e-mail is fraudulent.
* If in doubt about a suspicious message purporting to be from ECE IT Services, we encourage you to ask us.
* Sample Phishing email. Notice that it could have been crafted better to show it was sent from it@ece.ubc.ca. Also notice the Web link ends in webs.com (normally they conceal this part but the can not conceal the link). Just hover your mouse over the link and your browser should show you the real link. Any email from us, will have a web link to ece.ubc.ca in it.

Around 3:30pm yesterday (April 24, 2013) the load on our ldap server went up due to the large number of requests. This caused a slow down in ldap responses to our mail and file servers. Today, this slow down caused some login/webmail/email access as well as automounting of home directories on Linux machines to fail. 
We have deployed an extra ldap server to remedy the problem. As of 3:10pm the new server is up and it seems to reduce the overall load and resolve the problem.
If you are experiencing similar problems again (after 4 pm), please let us know via help@ece.ubc.ca.

Error When Using MATLAB Symbolic Math Toolbox on Linux

Users of MATLAB 7 on Linux have reported that any attempt to perform symbolic
calculations results in "Invalid MEX-file" error, as in this session:

This bug is due to an incompatibility between the Maple library code and the
C library on your system.

If you are using ''tcsh'' as your shell, the workaround is to set an
environment variable before invoking MATLAB:

If you are using ''bash'' as your shell, the workaround is:

How To Use the MATLAB Compiler

The MATLAB compiler invokes the command ''cc'' to compile C code. The proper
''cc'' command is not in the standard path as the normal compiler on the system
is ''gcc''. There is a ''cc'' in ''/usr/ucb/cc'' but it is not Sun's C compiler.
To make sure that Sun's C compiler is found by the Matlab compiler, add the
following to your ''.cshrc.solaris'' file (for Solaris OS only):
