The ECE Engineering Services and IT Support Team have confirmed that ECE MATLAB use periodically exceeds the total number of licenses available on the departmental MATLAB licensing server.

What happens if I can't obtain a license from the license manager?
MATLAB start-up will fail. You may receive an error message similar to the one below:

License checkout failed.
License Manager Error -4
Maximum number of users for MATLAB reached. Try again later.
To see a list of current users use the lmstat utility or contact your License Administrator.

How is this issue being addressed?
While you may continue using your current installation of MATLAB, you may periodically encounter the error shown above.

As of mid-February 2014, UBC IT offers a campus-wide non-commercial MATLAB licensing arrangement for UBC faculty, staff, researchers, and teaching labs. Full eligibility criteria may be found at:

I'm already using MATLAB. How may I avoid the license manager error?
If you are using a MATLAB version prior to Release 2013b, then please contact the ECE IT Support Team at help@ece.ubc.ca to arrange a time to collect the latest version of the software.

If you are already using Release 2013b, please contact the ECE IT Support Team to arrange a time to modify your existing license file to point to UBC IT's license server. Self-help instructions may be posted here at a later date.

I don't have MATLAB installed. How do I go about obtaining it?
Please contact the ECE IT Support Team at help@ece.ubc.ca to arrange a time to collect the MATLAB Reslease 2013b software installation packages. Installation instructions are available at
