MATLAB Licensing (Feb 2014)

From ECE Information Technology Services
Jump to navigationJump to search

The ECE Engineering Services and IT Support Team have confirmed that ECE MATLAB use periodically exceeds the total number of licenses available on the departmental MATLAB licensing server.

What happens if I can't obtain a license from the license manager?
MATLAB start-up will fail. You may receive an error message similar to the one below:

License checkout failed.
License Manager Error -4
Maximum number of users for MATLAB reached. Try again later.
To see a list of current users use the lmstat utility or contact your License Administrator.

How is this issue being addressed?
Many ECE faculty, researchers and staff continue using their current installation of MATLAB without difficulty. However, the verified license capacity ceiling means that you may periodically encounter the error noted above.

To address increased MATLAB licensing demand, UBC IT now offers a non-commercial MATLAB licensing arrangement for UBC faculty, researchers, staff and teaching labs. More information, including eligibility criteria, may be found at:

I'm already using MATLAB; how may I avoid the license manager error?
If you are using a MATLAB version prior to Release 2013b, then please contact the ECE IT Support Team at help@ece.ubc.ca to arrange a time to collect the latest version of the software.

If you are already using Release 2013b, please contact the ECE IT Support Team to arrange a time to modify your existing license file to point to UBC IT's license server. Self-help instructions may be posted here at a later date.

I don't have MATLAB installed; how may I obtain it?
If eligible, please contact the ECE IT Support Team at help@ece.ubc.ca to arrange a time to collect MATLAB Release 2013b installation packages. Installation instructions are available at
