Upcoming Change - Shared group data move to UBC TeamShare (April 7, 2014)
Shared group data for administrative and engineering services groups will move from the ECE file server to UBC's TeamShare file server on April 7th, 2014.
Default Debian Linux Shell - dash to bash - change successful (Mar 26, 2014)
The default shell for all ECE-managed Debian Linux workstations and servers was successfully changed from dash to bash on March 26th, 2014.
Upcoming Change - Default Debian Linux Shell - dash to bash (Mar 20, 2014)
In an effort to accommodate default script calls for some CAD software, the IT Support Team intends to modify the default SSH shell from dash to bash for all ECE Debian Linux-based servers & workstations. If you have any concerns about this impending change, please contact the IT Support Team at help@ece.ubc.ca no later than March 25th, 2014.
ECE E-mail Service - Message Delivery Delays & Rejections (Mar 14, 2014)
The ECE e-mail service experienced demand overload starting ~11:30am today. The cause has been determined, and the issue was resolved at ~3:00pm PDT on March 14, 2014. Please click on the link above for more information.
Storage Authorization Failure (Mar 13, 2014)
ECE's authentication system experienced a service error starting ~2pm today. The error prevented access to NFS storage exports, and affected multiple ECE services. The issue was resolved ~3:45pm today. Please click on the link above for more information.
SolidWorks Network License Manager (Mar 5, 2014)
Some users have reported difficulties operating SolidWorks when configured with the triad network license manager. The ECE Engineering Services and IT Support Teams are investigating the matter. Updates will be posted here.
Critical Security Update for Apple Products (Feb 27, 2014)
Apple has recently released the latest version of operating systems for desktop (OS X Mavericks v10.9.2) and mobile (iOS 7.0.6 and 6.1.6) which resolves a critical security issue that affects the ability to securely send sensitive data over the internet. Update instructions are available.
MATLAB Licensing (Feb 21, 2014)
Some users have reported a periodic license manager error when attempting to use MATLAB. Additional details are now available.
GADS Access (Feb 13, 2014)
Some users have reported difficulty logging into the Graduate Application Database service. Users should be aware that GADS is only accessible from the ECE network.
Network Security Audit (Feb 11-21, 2014)
All ECE TCP/IP networks will experience internal and external network security scans at various times starting February 11th and ending February 21st 2014.
E-mail Service Change (Feb 5, 2014)
The ECE E-mail service will undergo maintenance on Wednesday, February 5th from 8:00pm-8:30pm to introduce a security-enhanced mail relay. No service outage is expected.
Database server down (Jan 25, 2014)
The ECE database server was down from 7 am. Multiple services, including the RT ticket system and some websites, were unavailable as a result. Service should now be back to normal.
SMB server down (Jan 22, 2014)
The SMB server, which acts as the authentication and file server for the UBC_ECE domain, was unavailable from noon to 12:40 due to a disk failure. Apologies for any inconvenience.
mail.ece.ubc.ca down (Oct 10, 2013)
The ECE mail server was down from 4 am to 11:50. Apologies for any inconvenience.
Spam/phishing/mail delivery problems (Apr 15, 2013; updated May 21, 2013)
Spear phishing attack
Fraudsters have been launching a spear-phishing attack against ECE and FAS e-mail users. Please disregard messages asking you to log in on non-ECE and unencrypted websites. If you have fallen for the scam, change your password immediately. Learn more…
Spam/phishing/mail delivery problems (Apr 15, 2013; updated May 21, 2013)
One ECE user's account was compromised after divulging his/her password in a phishing attack, and was used to send spam. As a result of this incident, mail from ECE is currently being rejected by some e-mail providers, including GMail, Hotmail, and Comcast.
